High Tech Boost for WA Cancer Researchers

A $2.4 million grant awarded to the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research (formerly WAIMR) to purchase vital imaging equipment, will allow scientists to assess tumours and determine effective forms of treatment.
"We are extremely grateful to the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) for this grant, which will allow us to buy 3 pieces of expensive equipment that will be used by researchers across the State" said Professor Peter Leedman.
"This pre-clinical equipment is essential in the fight against human cancer, because it will help experts in the field move towards earlier disease detection, prevention strategies and assessment of the efficacy of new cancer treatments."
The pre-clinical MRI, PET/CT and Spect/CT scanners are non-invasive, high resolution monitoring tools, that are smaller versions of human imaging equipment, allowing researchers to examine tumour development in preclinical models of cancer.
"Investigating tumours in these models is a critical bridge between discoveries in the laboratory and the development of therapeutics to treat cancer patients," Professor Peter Klinken.
ACRF Chairman, Tom Dery, said the grant to Perkins would help to fast track research and increase the knowledge of ways to prevent cancer and develop more effective treatments.
The equipment will initially be housed in the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre (QEII) in Nedlands. When the new Perkins building on the QEII site is completed, the imaging equipment will be relocated to a purpose built facility within the building.
The equipment will be available to researchers from all over Western Australia, including the University of WA, QEII medical centre, Royal Perth hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research, the Lions Eye Institute and Pathwest.
