Title: How long are you distracted? An investigation of ongoing impairments arising from driving interruptions.
Area of relevance: Driver distraction
Becoming distracted while driving significantly increases the risk of serious accidents, injuries and fatalities. Recent evidence suggests that this risk may be further compounded by the fact that task performance can be affected even after the initial distraction has ended. To date there has been minimal research examining the time-course of recovery from interruptions while driving. This current research project will determine how long driver hazard perception is impaired after different types of interruption. The investigators will also look at the effectiveness of driver training intervention designed to protect against the disruptiveness of interruptions.

Title: Reducing speeding by improving driver prospective memory
Area of relevance: Speeding, younger drivers
Unintentional speeding can occur following interruptions such as stop signs, traffic lights or unexpected road hazards. Although in-vehicle aids can be used, drivers are readily distracted by additional visual or auditory inputs. In this study drivers are trained on a simulator to drive through a simulated urban environment to improve their speeding behaviour.

Title: The DIAMOND study: Diverging diamond interchanges in Western Australia- performance on a driving simulator
Area of relevance: Intersection crashes
In Western Australia 35% of fatal crashes and nearly 50% of serious injury crashes occur at intersections in the Perth metropolitan area. The Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) has been very successful in US studies at reducing the number of crashes at intersections. In this study a driving simulator will be used to assess how WA drivers perform in DDIs.
