Since obtaining his PhD in Prague, Czech Republic, he worked as Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Heart Research Institute in Sydney, after which he was a Junior Group Leader at the University of Munich, Germany and visiting Research Fellow at the University of Linkoping in Sweden. Since 2002, he is staff member of School of Medical Science, Griffith University, Southport, Qld, being professor as of 2009.

He is interested in the role of mitochondria in tumour formation/growth and as targets for anti-cancer therapy. He pioneered the design and synthesis of mitochondria-targeted anti-cancer agent, of which one is currently undergoing a clinical trial.

With his collaborator, Prof Mike Berridge (Malaghan Institute, Wellington, New Zealand), he discovered horizontal transfer of mitochondria in cancer. He has published some 200 original and review papers and his H-index is 52.
