Perkins Seminar: Dr Judith Fisher

Dr Judy Fisher is a West Australian elected to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), Multidisciplinary Expert Panel. IPBES is the intergovernmental body which assesses the state of biodiversity and of the ecosystem services it provides to society, in response to requests from decision makers. Judy has been a Co-ordinating Lead Author for the IPBES Global Assessment on Land Degradation and Restoration Assessment and a Lead Author for the IPBES Assessment on Biodiversity & Ecosystem Services in Asia and the Pacific, with a particular interest in Values and Culture across the Asia Pacific Region.

Judy is the Co-Chair of the IPBES Indigenous and Local Knowledge Task Force. Judy currently also Chairs an Eklipse Project on Restoration across the European Union. In addition, Judy holds a leadership role with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Commission on Ecosystem Management as Theme leader of the Ecosystems and Invasive Species Thematic Group.

Judy participated in the IPBES meeting in Paris in April/May this year which released the report that extinction of species was now proceeding at an unprecedented rate including the effects of this on human health.

Judy completed a PhD at the University of Western Australia studying the Ecosystem health of Bold Park in urban Perth, and has been working in Western Australia with indigenous peoples and local communities on the natural environment and links to people and their health for the past 25 years.
